An additional 35 confirmed COVID-19 cases in York Region, including one in Newmarket, brings the total to 276 today, March 31.

Other new confirmed cases are: one in Aurora; five in Markham; six in Richmond Hill; and 16 in Vaughan, with York Region public health reporting nine per cent of cases have been resolved.

Early confirmed travel-related cases in Newmarket, a woman in her 70s and a man in his 30s, have been resolved, and are no longer included in Newmarket's total case tally of 17.

The majority of the cases are in self-isolation, at 50 per cent, while eight per cent are hospitalized, including a Newmarket man in his 60s in ICU.

York Region's medical officer of health, Dr. Karim Kurji, said yesterday that the number of travel-related cases will likely continue to decline — the number remains steady at 30 per cent of today's 276 cases, after dropping from 38 per cent earlier in the week. The number of cases in which transmission isn't known, or under investigation, has jumped to 38 per cent.

Nearly half the confirmed COVID-19 cases in York Region, at 44 per cent, are in Vaughan, where two of the region's four COVID-related deaths have occurred.

Clusters of confirmed cases have been linked to two Vaughan gyms, Body Barre and the Al Palladini Community Centre, as well as at two long-term care homes in Markham, Kurji said yesterday in an online update.

Markham continues to have the second highest number of cases in the region, at 23 per cent. Newmarket accounts for six per cent of the total cases in the region, with 17 cases confirmed.

Of the 276 cases in York Region: 122 are confirmed in Vaughan; 62 in Markham; 45 in Richmond Hill; 17 in Newmarket; 11 in Aurora; eight in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in East Gwillimbury; four in King Township; one in Georgina. One case is outside the region. Location is pending in some cases.
