ONTARIO: Niagara man dies in hospital from COVID-19

This marks Niagara Region's first death in the global pandemic

A 84-year old Niagara man is the region's first fatality in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Niagara Health said the man died on Tuesday, after being treated in hospital for the virus that saw three new confirmed cases on the same day.

“On behalf of the hospital, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the patient’s family and loved ones at this extremely sad time. We all mourn this loss as a community, and this passing reinforces Niagara Health’s commitment to continue providing safe, high-quality and compassionate care,” said Niagara Health president Lynn Guerriero in a statement.

The region's seven cases have all been travel-related, with the latest involving travel to the U.S, Europe and Philippines.

“We are likely to see more travel related cases pop up in Niagara. We are paying close attention to pockets of local community spread. We could see more of that this week,” said acting medical officer of health, Mustafa Hirji.
