The Town of Newmarket will be adding urban shoulders and fresh line paintings to five local streets to help improve traffic safety.

The municipality is doing the line paintings, including centre lines, urban shoulders, left-turn lanes, stop bars and crosswalk lines on various streets starting April 24.

The municipality said these efforts will help make roads safer.

“These line markings are integral to a safer Newmarket,” the municipality said in a news release. “Urban shoulders also assist with slowing down traffic as a calming measure by making the road seem narrower.”

The five streets getting these line paintings include:

  • Veterans Way (Leslie Street to Memorial Circle) - urban shoulders and new centreline painting
  • Poppy Lane (Leslie Street to Memorial Circle) - urban shoulders, left-turn lanes and curb extension painting
  • Cenotaph Boulevard (Leslie Street to Memorial Circle) - urban shoulders and new centreline painting
  • Harewood Boulevard (Bexhill Road to Willow Lane) - new centreline painting
  • Copper Hills area – new crosswalk lines painting and new stop bars (where applicable).

The municipality confirmed that parking restrictions will not change on streets with the addition of urban shoulders.

However, the town said the contractor may ask residents in the affected areas to move vehicles off the streets to allow for the work to take place.

The municipality also said you cannot hold it responsible for damage to privately owned items on town property in the right of way or on the street.

“The town will work with the contractor to limit disruptions as much as possible,” the municipality said, noting dust and/or noise is possible.
