The Central York Fire Services' newest station, headquarters and training facility has won a 2024 Ontario Builder Award.

The 23,000-square-foot fire station at 300 Earl Stewart Dr. in Aurora, which opened in September 2022 to serve  Aurora and Newmarket, received the award in the specialty/niche category for group 2, project value $5 million to $25 million.

“The Ontario Builder Awards serve as a celebration of outstanding achievements in construction and development across the province. By winning this category, Station 4-5 is being recognized for its innovation, quality and overall contribution to the built environment,” Rocco Volpe, Central York Fire Services acting fire chief, said in a news release.

“I would like to extend my congratulations to Remo General Contracting Ltd. for bringing to life the collective future-forward vision championed by our late fire chief, Ian Laing, and the towns of Aurora and Newmarket. This recognition is a testament to the dedication, hard work and collaboration exhibited by all those involved in the project.”

The $11-million facility features a modern design, state-of-the-art equipment, and strategic location to enhance emergency response capabilities, the release stated. Remo General Contracting Ltd. was the general contractor that constructed the facility and submitted for the award.

The Ontario Builder Awards are produced by the Ontario General Contractors Association and are supported by its members and sponsors. For these Ontario Builder Awards, esthetic merit, innovation and effectiveness in design and planning are the key criteria.

Station 4-5 will be named in honour of late fire chief Ian Laing at a dedication ceremony in September during the Central York Fire Services annual open house and the station’s two-year anniversary.
