NewmarketToday, in partnership with the Ontario SPCA York Region Animal Centre, brings you a regular feature highlighting special pets in need of adoption.

Hello, friends. My name is Oakley.

I am approximately eight months old and 100 per cent a good boy. I am guessed to be a golden retriever cross. Crossed with what? Your guess is as good as mine.

I am your typical puppy learning to navigate the world the best I can. However, I have a couple of additions that make me extra special. I am both deaf and have a neurological condition guessed to be cerebellar hypoplasia. I have seen a veterinary neurologist, have had blood work done, radiographs and have been proactively treated for a parasite that could display similar symptoms.

We have not seen any progression of my symptoms in my foster home, and the neurologist does not expect my condition to progress. You’ll see me walking around with a little head tilt, maybe a mild tremor, and if I am confined into a small space or get very excited, I tend to run around in circles. With all this being said, I don’t let it stop me one bit.

I am looking for a home where people are patient with me and will support me and put in the effort to help me succeed in the ways I know I can. I am an extra special guy who will require an extra special home. If you think you’d be willing to give a guy like me a chance, please reach out to my friends here at the Ontario SPCA York Region Animal Centre by email or phone to set up a date and time to come and meet me. I might not be able to hear you come in, but I will be very excited to see you.

Here is a description of Oakley from his foster family:

Oakley is a happy, goofy and energetic puppy. He is a very sweet dog and is happy to greet anyone he meets. He loves to tug, chew and run outside. A cardboard box and paper will make him the happiest guy as he loves to shred. Oakley is doing well with house training. He will linger by the door or spin in tight circles to let you know he needs to go to the bathroom. We have found that he doesn’t like to go to the bathroom in new places, so it does take some patience in waiting for him to find the perfect spot. He will rarely go to the bathroom on walks and prefers to hold it until he is back home in his own backyard or a familiar place he has used before. Oakley has started learning how to sit, lie down and ‘touch’ using hand signals and is catching on fairly quickly. We typically wave to get his attention. He really likes cheese or liver treats but doesn’t seem to be a fan of anything peanut butter.
